(WWJ) Michigan Democrats no longer have full control of the state.
On Tuesday, Republicans took control of the Michigan House of Representatives, flipping four key seats in the State House.
In the 58th House District serving Macomb County, it appears Republican Ron Robinson will beat incumbent Democrat Nate Shannon.
Young Republican Rylee Linting, 22, of Grosse Ile, beat Democratic incumbent Jaime Churches in the 27th House District, which includes Wyandotte, Trenton, Grosse Ile, Riverview, Southgate and Gibraltar.
Many incumbents did keep their seats in the House, including Democrat Joe Tate with 93% of that vote, Republican Alicia St. Germaine, and Republican Donni Steele.
Democrats, who held the majority going into Tuesdays General Election, won full control of the Legislature in 2022 with a boost from abortion rights proposal and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at the top of the ticket.
Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950 Wednesday morning, Republican State Sen. Joe Bellino of Monroe County talked about what his party wants to do.
"I think in Michigan there's a lot of room for cuts," Bellino said. "If you've seen how government is grown the last two years, how bloated we got with — I think we have 2,500 more employees than we had two years ago — I there's cuts we can make, instead of enhancing revenue. We won't hear 'raise taxes.' We'll hear 'enhancing revenue.'"
How can Michiganders expect things to change?
"We'll go back to shared government, so nothing crazy will happen. The first term of the governor's, we did a lot of good stuff, but nothing crazy happened," Bellino said. "We did two years of Democratic control, and we haven't even thought about lame duck yet. We're gonna have the craziest lame duck Michigan's ever had."
"We blew through that huge, huge surplus of money," he added. "Our schools are gonna get less next year, infrastructure money's going down in 2025. We're in a tough position now. And it's time for Republicans to step up, and we'll do the work now."
