(HARTFORD, Conn. WTIC)—Connecticut's two senators are demanding Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell change his mind and allow a vote on $2,000 COVID relief checks.

McConnell says he won't be bullied and that many Americans households don't need the checks.

Senator Richard Blumenthal says, "For any of us who have been in Connecticut and seen the food lines, talked to families facing eviction and other dire financial challenges, we know that 6-hundred dollars is not enough. That's why we as Democrats have been advocating for months that it be higher."

Senator Chris Murphy says, "We just witnessed the state still has a nine percent positivity rate. While the vaccine is being distributed, we see that we have a tough, ugly and desperate winter ahead of us."

Senator Murphy says the extra 14-hundred dollars could keep families in their home through the winter, providing meals and paying for rent.

Both Senators say McConnell is the only roadblock to passage.

The 6-hundred dollar checks just recently approved could start going out today.
