(New Britain, Conn./WTIC) - State utility regulators are calling for big changes when it comes to the electric rate adjustment process in Connecticut.

The action was born out of customers of Eversource and United Illuminating hit with unexpectedly high bills over the summer.

PURA, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, is now ordering a complete overhaul of the process as well as a redesign of utility bills it says will bring transparency as to what customers are actually paying for.

Rates jumped for many in July who'd experienced added usage due to the pandemic, primarily from working or learning from home.

PURA found that the current framework wasn't able to account for fluctuations in usage habits, based mainly on forecasts it says were wrong.

Regulators now say the new framework is designed to create additional stability for customer bills.
