(New Britain, Conn./WTIC) - Customers who lose power for extensive periods of time due to a storm or other emergency will be eligible to receive credits and other compensation for their inconvenience.

PURA--the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority--has approved a measure offering credits of $25 after experiencing an outage lasting five days.

Also, $25 credits would also be offered incrementally for each additional 24-hour period without electricity.

Customers would also be compensated $250 for food or medicine that goes bad during an extended power outage.

During last summer's Tropical Storm Isaias, hundreds of thousands of Eversource and United Illuminating customers lost power, many for a week or more.

The provision takes effect Thursday.
