BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A sad story from a Connecticut Zoo after a lovable Red Panda named Berry passes away. Officials at the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport say Berry was 14 when she died on Wednesday. The Zoo said Berry passed away while recovering from anesthesia after a procedure. Zoo officials said Berry "lived a long and remarkable life," living way past the 8-10 year lifespan red pandas typically live.

Berry was a "beloved member of our zoo," with "a playful demeanor and striking natural beauty." CEO Jim Wharton according to FOX 61 said “Berry was such a special part of our zoo community, her passing is a really tough loss for us,” “She was a true ambassador for her species, helping us educate and inspire guests of all ages about the importance of protecting red pandas and their habitats. Her memory will certainly live on in the hearts of all who loved her.”

A necropsy will be performed on Berry.
There are about 25 hundred red pandas remaining in the wild.
