(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - There's some good news for those who attend institutions in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system.

The Board of Regents has voted to freeze tuition and fees for the 2021-22 academic year.

Citing financial hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, the board has moved to keep tuition and fees flat at all 17 institutions.

That includes the 12 community colleges, four state universities and Charter Oak State College.

Interim President Dr. Jane Gates says they can't ask students and families to shoulder the burden while working to maintain affordability.

Regents chairman Matt Fleury says the system still faces financial challenges and factors like continued state cuts could lead to future increases.

The plan also reduces fees for online instruction, among other reductions.
