State Rep. Bobby Sanchez easily won the Democratic primary for mayor of his hometown, New Britain. He'll face the four-term incumbent, Mayor Erin Stewart, on Nov. 2.

According to unofficial results compiled by the state, Sanchez earned 1,286 votes (64%) to 718 for Alicia Hernandez Strong (36%).

If he becomes mayor, Sanchez would give up his seat in the State House.

"I loved doing what I was doing up at the Capitol," says Sanchez. "I've always said I wanted to do anywhere between 10 and 12 years. I'm in my tenth year. I'm chair of the Education Committee. I accomplished a lot of what I wanted to do and that was to bring in the extra dollars for education and to work on school construction and bring in the money for that."

In Hamden's Democratic mayoral primary, Lauren Garrett (2962/56%) defeated incumbent Curt Leng (1,497/28%) and Peter Cyr (853/16%).

Republicans held a primary for first selectman in the Hartford County town of Burlington. Douglas Thompson (313 votes) was the winner, beating Dwight Harris (175).
