HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is encouraging residents to spend New Years Day outdoors as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes.
In previous years, Connecticut has hosted in-person events for First Day Hikes but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DEEP officials are offering events online with no specific timeframe.
Virtual and self-guided hikes and programs are being offered at over 10 state park and forest locations across Connecticut.
It's an effort to motivate people and families to begin the New Year by connecting with the outdoors, promoting exercise with a healthy hike and enjoying nature with family and friends, according to DEEP officials.
Besides self-guided, virtual hikes, some locations are offering interactive events such as a nature-themed scavenger hunt at James L. Goodwin State Forest and a songbird trail tour at Topsmead State Forest.
Officials are asking all participants to practice safety precautions such as wearing a mask, social distancing and keeping in small groups.
A full list of First Day Hikes can be found on the DEEP website.
