(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)- As Connecticut celebrates National Farmers Market Week that runs through Saturday, the weather has created " a real challenge," Connecticut Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt said.
According to Hurlburt, a dry May evolved into a very wet July, which produced a bountiful harvest of blueberries.
As for corn, it depends on the planting. Farmers have to stage their planting, relying on a market to harvest their product, Hurlburt said.
There may a gap later in the season where the July rainstorms stunted or washed out some of their seedlings, he said.
Connecticut has 90 certified farmers markets. Many offer a doubling on a person's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card, providing twice the amount of produce for the same price, Hurlburt said.
Also, as part of a nutrition program for Seniors and for those on the supplemental nutrition for women, infants and children, 21 dollars in vouchers are being offered to purchase food, he explained.
Hurlburt was a guest on the WTIC morning show.
