Sgt. Brian Mohl, 50, of the Connecticut State Police died after being swept down the Pomperaug River in Woodbury as torrential rain fell on Thursday morning.
The 26 year veteran of the force was one of more than 40 people killed by the powerful remnants of Hurricane Ida, from Maryland to Connecticut.
State police received a distress call before 4 am, as the trooper reported his cruiser was carried away by floodwater.
The cruiser was found empty. State police had to use Chopper One and drones to find the trooper, who was pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Sgt. Mohl was assigned to Troop L, which is based in Litchfield and covers Woodbury.
