HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—Connecticut's vaccination plan is underway with efforts to vaccinate healthcare personnel starting this week and long-term care facility residents starting Monday at the latest, according to public health officials.
With ten additional hospitals across Connecticut expected to get their share of the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, the state will have a total of twelve hospitals in possession of the vaccine, according to COVID-19 Vaccination Program Director Benjamin Bechtolsheim with the Department of Public Health.
Those shipments cover Phase 1A of Connecticut's vaccination plan with half of the state's week-one allocation going to healthcare workers and the other half going to long-term care facilities to enable vaccination for both residents and staff, Bechtolsheim said during a meeting with the Allocation Subcommittee of the Governor's Vaccine Advisory group Tuesday.
Vaccinations for long-term care residents are expected to begin late this week or by Monday at the latest, he said.
"The on-site clinics will be done by either CVS or Walgreens through the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) Federal Pharmacy Partnership for Long-term Care. All the clinics will be done on site starting with skilled nursing facilities," Bechtolsheim said.
The goal is to get first-dose clinics across all of the state's skilled nursing facilities within two to three weeks of starting the program, according to Bechtolsheim.
Shortly after, Bechtolsheim said distribution will begin for other assisted living facilities including continuing care retirement communities, intermediate care facilities for adults with developmental disabilities, veterans homes and other kinds of supportive housing.
A large shipment of additional vaccine doses is expected soon for Connecticut including an incoming Pfizer supply shipment and the Moderna vaccine should it get emergency use authorization.
"We will have roughly 100-thousand doses across both Pfizer and Moderna coming into the state next week," Bechtolsheim said.
Additional information is available on the state's official website.
