(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-Following a decrease in song bird mortalities, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection lifted its advisory against the use of bird feeders and bird baths.
Songbirds are generally considered the common grackle, blue jays, European starlings and American Robins, among others.
DEEP Spokesman Will Healey says the exact cause of the bird deaths are being investigated by Connecticut and several other states. Based on collected evidence, pathogens such as Avian influenza, West Nile Virus and Newcastle Disease have not been detected.
Healey advises cleaning feeders and bird baths at least once a week using soap and water. He also suggests disinfecting with a ten percent bleach solution to prevent potential infectious disease spread.
If you discover a dead bird, Healey says use gloves or a pastic bag on your hands to dispose into your garbage.
