(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-The state D-O-T is rolling out a new pedestrian safety campaign to reduce fatalities and injuries.
The measure requires drivers to slow or stop if a pedestrian is in any portion of the sidewalk, showing intent to cross by raising a hand or arm.
The law takes effect October first.
“Across the country, we are seeing increased pedestrian fatalities and injuries,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti said. “Nationally, we saw an unprecedented 55 percent increase in pedestrian deaths between 2009 and 2018. And although we are seeing a small recent decrease, pedestrian fatalities recorded in 2018 and 2019 have not been this high since 1990.”
The campaign will include tv ads, bus panels, posters and social media, Joe Cristalli, Program Coordinator for the DOT Highway Safety Office, said.
As of October first, dooring will be illegal. That's when a motorist opens a door in moving traffic, without regard for the safety of people and property.
