GREENWICH, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-The Executive Director of the Gasoline and Automotive Service Dealers of America, offers advice how customers can avoid the recent spate of car jackings at gas stations: lock your car and take your keys, Michael Fox said.

Fox said we've experienced this increase in car jackings once before during the Energy Crisis, with odd-even license plates.

He said many service stations "are equipped with CTV cameras at the pumps and inside. They help police track the people down, but it's not an easy task. They'll come out of the corners and sides of the gas stations. You've got to hope for some luck on that."

Fox blames the economy and lack of jobs for the carjackings. "We try to remind people about what's going on. The safest thing to do is turn your car off and keep the keys in your pocket," Fox said.

This week in Southington a woman had her car stolen at gunpoint.
