HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—Fairfield County has crossed into the "high" COVID-19 transmission category, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), making it the fifth county in Connecticut to be listed in that category.

Fairfield joins New Haven, Hartford, New London and Middlesex Counties in the CDC's highest transmission group which is defined as having a positivity rate of 10% or higher over the past seven days.

Connecticut's other three counties--Litchfield, Tolland and Windham--are still listed as having "substantial" transmission which is defined as having a positivity rate between 8 and 10% over the past seven days.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health is urging that all Connecticut residents (over the age of two) wear masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

Individuals at high risk for COVID-19 complications should also avoid large indoor gatherings that may have a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people, public health officials said.

Those high risk individuals include those that have compromised immune systems, diabetes, asthma, other lung diseases, pregnancy or obesity, officials said.

State officials reported a 4.25% daily positivity rate for Connecticut Tuesday afternoon.
