HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—In response to many COVID-19 patients suffering from lingering symptoms post-recovery, Hartford HealthCare has launched the state's first COVID-19 Recovery Center.

The center is specially designed to help those patients who continue to struggle with symptoms long after they leave the hospital or after they recover at home, according to Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Ajay Kumar at Hartford HealthCare.

"Based on the current literature, it has come to light that COVID-19 symptoms can be prolonged for an extended period that not only can be debilitating but can prevent patients from leading their healthiest lives," Kumar said.

Symptoms can include a lingering cough, shortness of breath, brain fog or fatigue. Long-term symptoms can also include mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and PTSD-like symptoms.

Despite it being over half a year since the pandemic began, Kumar said there are still many unknown factors about the virus, including how long certain symptoms will last and what causes them.

To address these symptoms, Hartford HealthCare has put together a multi-disciplinary team of experts to help patients through the recovery center.

The center can provide the proper medical treatment for a patient and triage the patient in the right place depending on their symptoms, Kumar said.

Currently, the center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kumar and other Hartford HealthCare officials encourage people to call the center at 860-827-3200 to schedule an in-person or virtual appointment.
