Highway tolls a no-go: Transportation Committee co-chair

Electronic tolls

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - The House co-chair of the General Assembly's Transportation Committee says he won't even entertain a debate on proposed highway tolls on Connecticut highways this year.

The "conversation has been asked and answered," Rep. Roland Lemar (D-New Haven) told WTIC News during an interview Thursday.

Lemar says there simply isn't support for tolls currently and he says debating the issue would be a waste of time.

Lemar says legislative leaders and Gov. Ned Lamont are looking at other ways to fund transportation projects in the short term, with the state's Special Transportation Fund running on empty.

An electronic tolls proposal has been introduced by two Democrats in the Senate  this year.

In 2019, Lamont spent a ton of political capital on getting some form of tolling approved, only to see legislative leaders hesitant to bring it up for a vote.
