(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-The lifting of Covid restrictions will likely translate into larger Kindergarten classrooms this fall, says a state education official.

Irene Parisi is the state's Chief Academic Officer. She says it's still early  to know final registration numbers, but indications are that the early childhood classrooms, from pre-k through second grade, should be larger. She also anticipates more  hiring by school districts.

Parisi says the state is working with school districts on a campaign for parents to register their children. She also says the state is working with districts on spending federal money and how to sustain any additional hiring and for operational and other tasks down the road.

Parisi says this year will be different for teachers too. She says they should take time to let the children develop relationships. Further, Parisi says teachers need to re-think their routines, like sitting for long periods of time. Parisi says the students may have to develop skill sets, chiefly from the social perspective.
