(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-The New Year brings some new laws for Connecticut Police.
One involves officers submitting to a behavioral health assessment at least once every five years.
Senate Judiciary Committee Co-Chair, Gary Winfield: "There were many people who thought we should have it every two years because of the job...there were negotiations and five years is what
we settled upon."
Another new law requires officers to display their badge and name tag on the outside of their uniforms. "This is so officers can be identified and who the public is interacting with. He says that way if something happens there can be conversations about what the next steps are. And he says you need to know who you dealt with and the badge number to make that happen.
The other new law deals with the Police Officer Standards and Training Council. It must report on efforts to recruit, retain and promote minority police officers in its annual report.
"Without due diligence, it may not mean much. That's why we put it in the bill", Winfield said.
