(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-Pending regulatory approval, Pfizer officials are expecting to soon have a COVID-19 vaccine for children ages five to eleven.
Excited about the development is Dr. John Schreiber, Chief of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
Pfizer results show very strong protection in the age group and very little problems, Schreiber said. However, Schreiber added that final regulatory approval is necessary.
"I think the data clearly shows the benefit of immunization far outweighs the risk. This is not a nice virus. Our job is to correct misinformation for parents to make the risk/benefit analysis. When they do, they will fall into the benefit category and get their kids immunized," he said.
Full regulatory approval could come later this fall, Schreiber said.
The American Academy of Pediatrics reports 5.3 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since early September. Further, 243-thousand cases were added in one week.
