(SOUTH WINDSOR, CONN. WTIC)-The Town of South Windsor and the DATTCO bus company are offering seven thousand dollar bonuses to help improve the school bus driver shortage and to help retain them.
To ensure the drivers remain employed, the bonus is paid in different increments over a 270-day period.
The driver shortage is the worst she's experienced, DATTCO Vice President Bryony Chamberlain said.
The part-time drivers earn between $18.50 and $25 an hour. If the driver's children attend the route being driven, they can come along, eliminating the need for child-care, Chamberlain said.
The on-boarding process for drivers can take time, but steps are being taken with the DMV to shorten that time-frame, Chamberlain explained.
Other towns have characterized the shortage as a crisis.
