Speed enforcement cameras proposed for some Connecticut roads

Speed camera

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Connecticut lawmakers are expected to consider a pair of proposals this legislative session to install cameras to enforce speed limits in highway work zones and in school zones.

The highway work zone proposal comes from the state Department of Transportation. The school zone proposal comes from pedestrian safety advocates.

Though the co-chair of the General Assembly's Transportation Committee, Rep. Roland Lemar (D-New Haven), says law enforcement reaction to the proposals has been mixed, the Connecticut State Police Union is voicing opposition.

Union Executive Director Andrew Matthews says speed enforcement cameras raise constitutional questions. He insists it should be the job of police officers-- not machines-- to enforce traffic laws.

Lemar says both proposals deserve a look. He suggests there could be pilot programs to test out the cameras in highway work zones and around school to see if they really do enhance safety.
