HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-To streamline the process of hiring new school bus drivers, the State Board of Education has formed a school bus driver task force.

The state is also working with various state agencies to expedite the process, State Board of Education Communications Director Eric Scoville said.

The state researched nine thousand eligible drivers, he said.

"Two thousand of those are currently not driving. We targeted them to apply for positions in the school bus industry. We are in constant contact with the industry and and once we get those names we will turn them over to the companies," Scoville said.

"This is a crisis and all state agencies are working together to look at the process. That's a good thing for the industry itself and we are pleased with that occurring," State Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker said.

The remarks came during a meeting of the State Board of Education.
