(NEW HAVEN, CONN. WTIC)-A Professor at the University of New Haven pinpoints two factors for a 30-percent increase in murders in 2020, over the previous year. The figures come from the FBI.
Professor Mike Lawlor, an advisor to former Governor Daniel Malloy, says the two factors are Covid 19 and the murder of George Floyd. He points out the numbers are consistent nation-wide.

"On the other hand overall crime continues to drop. Property crime and violent crime in both the general categories. There were fewer of those reported in 2020 compared to the previous year. It's also important to keep in mind that 2019 and 2018 were historic lows for reported crime in the country," Lawlor said.
The FBI did report that the murder figures for 2020 were the highest since the Bureau began tracking numbers in the 1960's.
