(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection is undergoing an upgrade of its background check system for gun sales, pistol permit applications and the transfer of firearms.
Spokesman Brian Foley says the upgrade was at least ten years overdue. It has slowed applications because firearms dealers had to close four and a half days to allow for the upgrade. Foley says they were notified well in advance of the shutdown. The upgrade is occurring as the state has experienced an unprecedented level of gun sales.
Foley says the new system will be more efficient, allowing gun dealers to perform transactions online.
The system is currently in the beta-testing stage. Foley says it's unclear when that process will be complete.
