CROMWELL, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—Travelers is extending its title sponsorship of the Travelers Championship, Connecticut's PGA Tour tournament, through 2030, officials announced Monday.

The company has been the title sponsor since 2007, but it was originally in place through 2024. Travelers Chairman and CEO Alan Schnitzer said the reason for the extension lies with the charitable mission of the tournament.

According to Schnitzer, the tournament has raised more than $20 million for nearly 800 organizations.

"The latest example of that is the community's support that came out for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp after it was devastated by a fire last month. Within a week, the camp raised more than $3 million to support rebuilding inspired by a $1 million matching gift from Travelers and the Travelers Championship," Schnitzer said.

Schnitzer said the fundraising efforts keep them committed alongside the historic golf moments and the community that has grown around the tournament. Beyond that, the tournament also generates economy activity for Connecticut and its communities, he said.

Details are still being ironed out for this year's championship, Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube said, as fans anticipate to be back at the golf course.

Grube explained that the golf course will look different this year to accommodate fans since safety precautions remain to be a top priority amid the ongoing pandemic. It's currently unknown how many fans will be allowed back.

Looking to the future, Travelers Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Andy Bessette said, "With this extension, the winner of the 2030 Travelers Championship may be someone who wasn't even born when we started. That's funny and that's scary in a different way."

The 2021 Travelers Championship is being held at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell from June 21 -27.
