(Storrs, Conn./WTIC) - A new era has dawned on the UConn football program with the appointment of Lou Spanos as interim head coach.

The defensive coordinator takes over for Randy Edsall, who first announced over the weekend that he'd retire at season's end, only to come to an agreement Monday with the university that he'd leave immediately.

Spanos, whose previous stops include Tulsa, Alabama and several NFL teams, says he won't change who he is.

He's been associated with many great coaches in his career that spans over 25 years, Spanos said.

UConn has been one of the worst teams in the nation for several years, winning all of six games since 2017.

The team did not play last year due to the pandemic.
