STORRS, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—The University of Connecticut is requiring off-campus and commuter students returning to the Storrs campus to take weekly COVID-19 home-based tests through the month of February.

UConn officials announced Wednesday that students that are not living on the Storrs campus but have registered for in-person instruction or who will be regularly visiting the campus due to research or work must participate in the weekly surveillance testing.

First, commuter students must complete a re-entry test in January before returning to campus, officials said. The university is offering free testing from January 25 to January 28.

After taking the re-entry test, UConn officials will give a Vault testing kit to students for the first week of February.

The home-based test comes with instructions for collecting saliva which is used to check if someone is currently infected with COVID-19. Students must turn in the complete test within the first four days of February, officials said.

Another Vault testing kit will then be sent out to be complete the following week, and the process will continue Monday through Thursday for the rest of the month, according to officials.

On UConn's Student Health website, it states that students who have been COVID-positive in the past 90 days do not need to be tested.
