The World Series begins tonight on what would have been Mickey Mantle’s 89th birthday.
It’s been 25 years since The Mick’s death, and Hollywood has flirted for the last quarter century with the idea of making a Mantle biopic.
There is a script that is out there, and it has the makings of becoming one of the greatest sports movies ever made.
“This is, in my judgement, the best script I’ve ever written,” Angelo Pizzo told me earlier this year.
What does Pizzo know about scripting great sports films? Well, all he did was write Hoosiers and Rudy, and one or both of those are on every fan’s Mount Rushmore of the best sports movies of all-time, right?
And he thinks his Mantle script is better than both of them!
Here is a snippet from the “30 With Murti” podcast I did with Pizzo earlier this year, in which he gives the backstory on his Mantle script that at one point had heavyweights like Brad Pitt and Matt Damon attached to it – but for reasons known only to Hollywood, we are still waiting to see it.
