Aaron Hicks was, and still is, a tremendous golfer, and fellow SoCal native Tiger Woods was one of his idols growing up.
That alone could make hearing the news of Woods’ car accident earlier this week tough, but it was double-tough for Hicks for a personal reason: if he married his current girlfriend, he'd be Tiger's nephew-in-law.
“My girlfriend is Cheyenne (Woods), and it was extremely scary, because she’s a family member and wanted to make sure he was okay,” Hicks told the media on Zoom on Thursday. “Right now, I think we’re just trying to make sure that with everything that’s going on, the surgeries and stuff, that he’s just going to be healthy again.”
Hicks has only met Tiger once, but knows that it’s family first.
“Making sure that he can be a father again and be able to enjoy and run around and play with his kids, that’s what’s important to us right now,” Hicks said.
It’s still unclear if Woods will ever be able to return to professional golf, or if the family legacy will be left to Cheyenne, a former ACC Champion at Wake Forest who could soon become the first African-American woman to win an event on the LPGA Tour.
Cheyenne also plays often with Hicks, caddying for him in a recent tournament, and she was his playing partner last month when Hicks memorably aced a 303-yard Par 4 fourth hole at the Silverleaf Club outside Phoenix.
“It felt great. Nice little three wood. Slight draw around the front on the front side of the green and just trickled in,” Hicks told WFAN’s Sweeny Murti. “It was amazing to get one.”
