The Yankees’ acquisition of Andrew Benintendi conflicted with previous reports that the team was hesitant to deal for the obvious outfield upgrade because he was unvaccinated against COVID-19, which would prevent him from being able to play in Toronto in September, and potentially the playoffs.
But reports after the trade indicate that Benintendi’s vaccination status before the deal will no longer be a problem.
Some big names in the #Yankees got their vaccination status squared away to enter and play in Toronto. It is understood that Andrew Benintendi won’t be the exception.

Jon Heyman reported Wednesday night that Benintendi has “told folks” that he will get vaccinated, meaning the Yankees likely heard what they needed to hear before pulling the trigger on a trade. ESPN’s Marly Rivera also reported that the expectation is for Benintendi to be vaccinated after being placed on the restricted list when the Royals traveled to Toronto.
If that is the case, the Yanks would still have their full roster available for games in Toronto, which could be a big factor in the postseason.
