With the game seemingly well in hand for the Blue Jays in the top of the ninth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was plunked by Greg Weissert, and held a stare towards the Yankee pitcher as he (very) slowly made his way to first base.
That’s when Anthony Rizzo came over and had some words for Guerrero.
“Just walk to first base,” Rizzo said when asked what he said to Guerrero. “That’s really it. It wasn’t much more than that. I just took exception. I’m just going to back my teammate up. He was just staring him down like that. It was obviously an accident, and I get Vlad’s side of being pissed. I’ve been hit many times.”
Guerrero has been a thorn in the Yankees’ side in recent years, and hasn’t hid his lack of desire to ever play for the Yanks. But Rizzo believes it was an isolated incident that won’t carry over into the rest of the series.
“Probably not,” Rizzo said. “They’re a good team, we’re a good team, and I just think naturally, the tension is always high.
“They play their game, we play our game. That’s really it.”
