There's a long-standing argument in NFL crowds about why wins should or should not be a quarterback stat. After all, if one throws for 400 yards and three scores, but loses in a 35-31 thriller, is that really his fault? Or conversely, if Mac Jones throws the ball three times in the snow, does he really deserve credit for a win over Buffalo?
Either way, QBs are credited regardless, and in some instances it's further proof of how dominant certain ones are against some teams. Take Sunday, for example, when Tom Brady beat Buffalo and Aaron Rodgers beat Chicago for what seems like the million time each. But is that actually the case? As we look at the quarterbacks with the best win percentages all-time against one team (minimum 18 starts), history tells us... yes.
9) Tom Brady vs Jets (29-7): It's more popular to think that Brady's most dominant times came against New York, but technically that's untrue... though it's not like the GOAT was bad against the Jets. He's had 57 touchdowns to just 15 interceptions against his former AFC East rival, and guess what? He can make it an even 30 wins in Week 17 when the Bucs take on the Jets on January 2.
8) Aaron Rodgers vs Bears (22-5): Sunday night's victory was Rodgers' 22nd against Chicago, which is four more than he has against anybody else. He has 61 touchdowns (also his most against one team) to only 10 interceptions - although congrats to the Bears, as no one else has picked off the future Hall of Famer that many times.
7) Len Dawson vs Broncos (21-4): The first of the non-modern quarterbacks, the Hall of Famer owned Denver in his career more than he did any other team. For context, his 21 wins is seven more than the next closest opponent (the Chargers) and his 37 touchdowns are more than he had against anyone else.
T4) Troy Aikman vs Cardinals, Peyton Manning vs Texans & Joe Flacco vs Browns (17-3): Two of these make sense, given Aikman and Manning's Hall of Fame careers (with Peyton, particularly when he was at the height of his powers at the same time as Houston being an expansion franchise). But Flacco? Yes, the current Jets backup QB was particularly dominant against Cleveland when he was the Ravens' starter, winning more games and throwing for more touchdowns than against any single opponent. Heck, even his four rushing scores against the Browns are the most he's had against one team.
3) Bob Griese vs Bills (18-2-1): Before Brady tortured the Bills twice a year, it was Griese doing it with Miami. He was statistically more dominant against the Jets, in terms of yards and touchdowns, but in the win column he owned Buffalo, particularly later in his career. After he lost his first ever start to the Bills and tied the third, he went 17-1 in his final 18 career games.
2) Ben Roethlisberger vs Browns (25-3-1): Cleveland finally got the better of Big Ben in last year's playoffs, but historically he's been a one-man wrecking crew against the AFC North rivals, and the numbers could actually be better, as there were a few instances where he sat out Week 17 against Cleveland to rest for the playoffs. And the most mind-boggling stat? Since the Browns' reincarnation in 1999, Baker Mayfield has the most wins in the city of Cleveland, with 19. Second? Big Ben, with 11.
1) Tom Brady vs Bills (33-3): Not only is Brady's .912 win percentage against Buffalo the highest of all-time by a QB against one team, the 33 wins is also a record. Of his 700 career touchdowns, 72 have come at Buffalo's expense. And Sunday's overtime winner was just salt in the wound, after the Bills erased a 24-3 halftime deficit, only to see Brady do what he does in OT.
