Boomer & Gio react to Yankees meltdown: 'Left side of the defense fell apart in 30 seconds'

The Yankees looked destined for an inspiring sweep of the first-place Orioles this weekend, especially after a dramatic three-run blast by Ben Rice turned a 3-2 ninth inning deficit into a 5-3 lead with Clay Holmes coming out of the bullpen.

Instead, with two outs, Anthony Volpe booted a ground ball that looked like the sure final out, and Alex Verdugo misplayed a lazy fly ball by Cedric Mullins to give the O’s a walk-off win, sending them, not the Yankees, into the break with a one-game lead atop the AL East.

“That is the worst,” Boomer said. “The left side of the defense fell apart in 30 seconds. A ground ball and a can of corn. Come on, man.

“The game is over right there. It’s a sweep, and you’re going into the All-Star break on a high, you’re in first place, and all of a sudden, ugh.”

Verdugo, who has been slumping badly at the plate since May, took a step in before trying to scurry back to the fly ball (which had a 99 percent catch probability per Statcast), and fell as he tried to get back. He will have to wait until Friday to get redemption.

“Imagine being Alex Verdugo and having to sit on that for the All-Star break?” Gio said. “I don’t know if he’s the type of guy who sits on things, but if that were me, I’d be thinking about that every night.”
