As the Yankees complete a trade for Cody Bellinger, they have now added the best starter in baseball since 2020 based on ERA in Max Fried, the best reliever in the game based on the same statistic in that span in Devin Williams, and a former MVP in Bellinger.
All things considered, after losing one of the best offensive players in the sport in Juan Soto, Boomer and Gio believe Brian Cashman is acing his backup plan.
“I think they’ve done a really good job in doing what they should be doing after losing Juan Soto,” Gio said, noting the risks in Fried’s contract but the necessity to take on those risks to assure he would make the Bronx his home. You had to guarantee him those eight years to have the best years out of him for the first 3-4 years.
“I think if you’re a Yankee fan, you’re happy. You’re happy that Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner are not sitting around and sitting on their hands. They’re going out and being proactive, and they’re gonna make sure they capitalize while Aaron Judge is still the best hitter in baseball…and they have a pitcher who won the Cy Young a year ago.”
The lineup still doesn’t feel the same without Soto and Judge hitting back-to-back, but the trade for Bellinger on Tuesday addresses a big need in the lineup and in the field, and Boomer and Gio both believe there is more to come, most likely a first baseman.
As for the players they’ve added so far, Boomer believes they have all been quality “imports,” as Cashman would call them.
“I think they added three really good baseball players to a team that could use three really good baseball players,” Boomer said.
