Boomer baffled by Gleyber Torres' continued baserunning miscues

Gleyber Torres cost the Yankees on the bases in a big spot again on Tuesday night, a familiar refrain in 2024, as Torres is now tied for the league lead in being thrown out at home plate.

Had Torres stayed at third base, the tying and go-ahead runs would have been in scoring position for Aaron Judge, with a chance to clinch the division. Instead, clinching will have to wait another day, and frustrations over Torres’ mental gaffes resurfaced in emphatic fashion.

“I don’t know what it is about baserunning with him,” Boomer said. “There’s something about being on the bases. I don’t want to kill the guy. When we all got on his ass for loading out of the box and ultimately getting thrown out at home plate…like six or seven weeks ago, he’s played a lot better. he’s hustled and he’s hitting.

“I don’t want to kill the guy, but my God, what is it with him and baserunning?”

Both Boomer and Gio pointed to Torres’ improved play of late, as he has been one of the Yankees’ best hitters for the better part of a month. But with the playoffs approaching, where every move or decision is put under the microscope, and the Yanks will not be able to afford those kind of miscues. So, perhaps it’s time for Torres to be given another reminder.

“The guy has three hits in a game, and I’m not saying he’s not hustling,” Boomer said. “He’s been hustling since he got chewed out by everybody for the fifth time.”
