Weeks ago, Boomer Esiason and Joe Benigno had a bit of a summit on the Boomer & Gio Show, hashing out their thoughts that one was too emotional (Joe) while the other was too much of a cheerleader (Boomer).
If Joe B. was listening to the WFAN morning show around 6:30 on Monday, though, then he must have been smiling, because it seems as if ex-Jet Esiason has finally succumbed to the dark side, and joined the “Fire Adam Gase” bandwagon.
“If you take a look at Le’Veon Bell’s Twitter feed and see the things he’s liking (about his usage or lack thereof), that tells you all you need to know. What an awful sign that was, and what a disjointed situation Gase and Mike Maccagnan created for Joe Douglas,” Boomer said.
Le’Veon issues aside, Boomer then threw out a nugget from the CBS football research department that came out after Sunday’s 20-point loss.
“I didn’t even realize Adam Gase now has 30 wins, 30 double-digit losses, and nine single-digit losses in his career,” Boomer revealed.
“This is a team that’s flat. We all knew they were going to lose this week and it would be ugly, and Kyler Murray would have the game of the year, and that’s what he did. I know there’s pride somewhere in that locker room, but they are a flat, misguided, and overmatched team in so many ways.”
Boomer then had a prediction or two.
“If I had to put my crystal ball on to look into the future, I would think maybe the Jets trade Sam Darnold to San Francisco, end up with the No. 1 pick, and draft Trevor Lawrence – and they better bring someone in here that Lawrence can play for and start over that way,” Boomer said. “It’s not all Joe Douglas’ issues, they stem from the previous regime and the awkwardness of that regime when Gase was brought in.”
And then, the death knell from Norman’s conquest.
“He’s gotta go – he has to be let go. I hate saying that about coaches, I’m not a big proponent of screaming about coaches to be fired, but the Falcons mercifully let Dan Quinn and (GM Thomas) Dimitroff go yesterday, and you can’t keep trying the same things over and over and over,” he said. “I usually preach patience with coaches, but this is turning into the Ben McAdoo situation, where it looks awful. I have to tell you, sitting at CBS and watching this yesterday with people who are in the know, they said it is about as bad as a team can look at every level.”
Later, after Gio jumped in to remind Boomer that Ben McAdoo at least tried to make moves (like benching Eli Manning and drafting Patrick Mahomes) and Jerry played some clips of Gase talking about how well the team practices, Boomer lost it again.
“They are a completely disjointed team. That’s the thing. It’s not tied together. When you watch good teams play and compete, you realize that the Jets basically have no competitive desire,” Boomer ranted, before moving more into the Le’Veon Bell mess. “I was part of a similar team in 1995, the first year of a coach and the bloodletting of a roster – you could say maybe they were trying to build for the future, but that’s not fun for a veteran player. Le’Veon came from a winning franchise in Pittsburgh, and now he’s part of this mess. They should just move on from all of it and get rid of it. It’s only hurting. His social media tells you all you need to know, and enough is enough already.”
