Boomer calls out Yankee fans booing Aaron Hicks: 'No reason to go after him like that'

Aaron Hicks heard more boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd in his first start of the season on Monday night, and Boomer says fans need to ease up on the struggling outfielder.

“He’s gotten injured over the past couple years, maybe his bat has slowed down, but I don’t see the reason for booing him when you’re winning 8-1,” Boomer said.

“There’s no reason to go after him like that.”

Hicks went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, and is coming off a 2022 when he was finally healthy, but struggled badly at the plate and in the outfield. Yankee fans have clearly had enough with the once promising center fielder who earned a seven-year, $70 million contract extension after the 2018 season, and both Boomer and Gio agree that the Yanks need to swallow their pride, eat some of that contract, and get Hicks a much needed change of scenery.

“This guy is trying to get his career back on track, and maybe he can’t do it here,” Boomer said. “I’m sure the Yankees have tried to move him and nobody has wanted him, but it’s hard to watch. Because at one point in time, they thought he was gonna be their answer in center field for the next 10 years.

“They could DFA him and eat the contract, or trade him and eat part of the contact. That’s really what they should do if they really want to just alleviate the pressure.”
