As the Yankees lost their second straight and once again failed to take a rubber game, Boomer wondered when the front office will put its foot down and make some changes, particularly with some of the struggling veterans that continue to play every day.
“Let’s say you DFA DJ LeMahieu and Verdugo and bring up Dominguez.
Are you sending a message to your veteran players in a positive light, or are you putting everybody on blast? Is that panicking? What would that be seen as?” Boomer said. “[LeMahieu] obviously cooked. The last year and a half, he hasn’t done anything. And I feel bad, because everybody likes him and respects him.
“When is it enough, where you’re seeing the same thing over and over again? You’ve got to do something.”
Instead, the Yankees left Dominguez in the minors, and Verdugo continues to play every day while LeMahieu gets consistent playing time. Boomer noted that the Mets and David Stearns have been quick to ditch struggling veterans this year and replacing them with younger, more capable role players that have thrived, and the Yankees need to follow a similar route.
“They can’t keep doing this,” Boomer said. “I don’t think you can just kick it into gear. You have to somehow get something going here.”
