Making sense of the Rafael Devers drama
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Red Sox' quest to lock up their foundation for years to come might be taking a turn in their favor.
As was first reported by MassLive.com Saturday night after the Red Sox' 4-3 loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Field, Kristian Campbell appears to be moving toward an agreement on a contract extension with the Sox.
After the loss, in which Campbell hit his first career home run, the 22-year-old acknowledged that the two sides have been talking, stopping short of revealing if he believed a deal was imminent.
"They’re talking back and forth, I know that for a fact," Campbell said. "I'm not sure how close or not close it is, but we got some communications on that for sure."
If Campbell was to agree to an extension, he would represent the youngest player the Sox have inked to such a multi-year deal. The team signed Ceddanne Rafaela to an eight-year, $50 million deal last April at the age of 23 years old, having played in just 39 major league games.
And while Campbell has now played in just three big league games, he continues to present the kind of package that has made the Red Sox believe he is worth a long-term investment.
Playing both second base and left field, he has gone 5-for-10 with two walks and just two strikeouts, while playing solid defense at both positions. His offensive highlight, to date, was the fourth-inning home run he hit.
