Red Sox reportedly ink two-time All-Star Yasmani Grandal

The Red Sox have taken a step toward weathering the storm at the catching position in the absence of the injured Connor Wong.

According to Robert Murray of Fansided, the Sox have agreed to a minor-league deal with two-time All-Star Yasmani Grandal.

The 36-year-old Grandal played for the Pirates in 2024, appearing in 72 games. Prior to that season, the switch-hitter had spent the previous four years with the White Sox.

Grandal has been named an All-Star twice, the first occasion coming in 2015 with the Dodgers, with his second nod arriving in perhaps his best all-around season in 2019 with the Brewers. That year he finished with 28 home runs and an .848 OPS in 153 games.

While it will undoubtedly take some time for Grandal to get up to speed considering he missed all of spring training, he does represent a more experienced option to fill in for Wong. The Sox starting backstop is currently on the injured list with a fractured pinky finger.

Blake Sabol was called up from Triple-A Worcester earlier in the week to back up Carlos Narvaez. The other veteran catching option would be Grandal's former teammate with the White Sox, Seby Zavala, who has gotten off to a slow start with the WooSox (3-for-22, 10 strikeouts).
