The Yankees seem to have multiple areas of need on their roster after being exposed in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Astros in the ALCS, but the starting rotation doesn’t seem to be one of them.
Jameson Taillon is the lone free agent of the team’s starting core, while the Yanks have already picked up their club option on Luis Severino. So, Brian Cashman sees a rotation fairly set already heading into the offseason.
“I feel good about going into the wintertime having [Gerrit] Cole, Nestor [Cortes], Severino, [Frankie] Montas as your first four however you want to cut that with [Domingo] German obviously in the fifth spot,” Cashman said, via Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
Cole and Cortes were top-notch contributors for the Yankees for much of the season, while Severino showed he can still pitch near his 2018 levels when healthy. German filled in nicely when needed when the rotation suffered injury, but Montas was a trade deadline disaster, struggling badly from the moment he arrived before being shut down with a shoulder injury.
But Cashman expects a rebound season from Montas in 2023.
“We felt like he was the second-best starter on the market that was available,” Cashman said. “He has a lot of characteristics that we like in pitchers. He's got the ground ball ability, the strikeout ability and it would've been nice to have him fully healthy.”
