BT: Luis Gil facing 'massive' start for Yankees to right ship
After logging a 1.82 ERA through his first 12 starts of the season, Luis Gil has bottomed out in his last four outings, pitching to an 8.82 ERA after allowing 16 runs on 21 hits in 16.1 innings of work.
Gil’s slump has come on the heels of Carlos Rodon also bottoming out of late, while Clarke Schmidt remains on the IL.
So, as Gil gets set to take the mound on Tuesday night against the Reds, BT says it could be the biggest start of the Yankees season so far, as it could show whether or not the Bombers still have a legitimate 1-2 punch atop the rotation.
“This is absolutely massive,” BT said. “I don’t know what to expect anymore. I’m not worried like I am with Rodon…the level of fragility he is now showing is alarming. He might be completely, mentally, done. Clarke Schmidt, he’s not back for at least five weeks…we all like Nestor Cortes, but I don’t trust him against really good teams.
“So who exactly is gonna take the baseball against a team like the Orioles and shut them down? I know Cole will answer the bell. I know Luis Gil answered the bell in late April…but these last five starts, he looks totally different.”
BT sees a pitcher who is suddenly not commanding his pitches or the strike zone over the last four starts, and while he believes Gil is capable of fixing that and getting back on track, he needs to see it start on Tuesday.
“If Luis Gil doesn’t pitch well tonight…I don’t know how whatever confidence remains in him doesn’t almost fully dissipate,” BT said.
