Boomer & Gio: Bullpens are Achilles heel for Yankees, Mets come October

Gio declared New York as the center of the baseball universe on Wednesday, given the possession of two first-place teams, the likely AL MVP in Aaron Judge, and arguably the best closer in baseball in Edwin Diaz.

Dreams of a Subway Series in October remain, but both Boomer and Gio agree that if neither team makes it to the Fall Classic, it will be because of the bullpen.

“For the Mets, it’s not Edwin Diaz. It’s the bridge to Diaz,” Gio said, before saying that the problem for the Yankee bullpen is more just everybody than one component.

“They scare the hell out of me.”

Boomer wondered which members of each team’s starting rotation could find themselves in the bullpen for long relief in the playoffs, and he had a surprising answer for the Mets in Carlos Carrasco.

“Starters certainly are important, but it’s those middle to late innings that wind up winning games, and the teams with the best bullpens, along with home runs…that’s how you win championships,” Boomer said.

“Against good teams, [Carrasco] has struggled. I’m thinking he would be a candidate to go into the bullpen in case a starter gets in trouble and he can give you four or five innings.”
