C-Mac: Hal Steinbrenner's legacy on the line with Juan Soto, and he won't go down without a fight

As the Juan Soto sweepstakes seem to be dwindling down to the finalists, Chris McMonigle says it’s no surprise that the Yankees are right in the thick of things, because Hal Steinbrenner made it clear earlier in the offseason that he has heard the noise, and C-Mac says that means he will be in it until the end.

“‘I know what’s expected of me.’ If he does know that, and he does ‘have ears,’ if he’s aware of what’s expected of him, then we’re on line with what we’re seeing,” C-Mac said.

“What is expected of Hal Steinbrenner is to sign Juan Soto. Plain and simple. I don’t expect him to throw around money to a bunch of average players...go get the best player.”

C-Mac says if the Yankees’ offer to Soto is above $600 million, as recent reports indicate, then they might as well take it to the end and get the free agent superstar at any cost, because spending that money on multiple other players who are all far inferior to Soto isn’t a reliable backup option.

“Make no mistake. There is no serviceable, suitable Plan B. There isn’t,” C-Mac said. “Plan B is not nearly anywhere close to what the fanbase expects of him. Nowhere close. Juan Soto is a generational player who is one of the better hitters, arguably, in the last 50 years in Major League Baseball. He knows the strike zone better than anyone we’ve seen outside of Ted Williams and Barry Bonds. And he’s 26 years old and in his prime.”
