The most notable part of Juan Soto’s introductory press conference with the Mets was the revelation that the superstar hasn’t talked to any of his former Yankee teammates since they were eliminated from the World Series over six weeks ago.
For Chris McMonigle, the reaction to Soto’s quote was warranted, as he was stunned to hear that he hadn’t reached out to anybody from his former team, and vice versa.
“To me, that is jarring,” C-Mac said. “And it’s hard to believe, quite honestly. It’s hard to believe that this guy spent a year with the New York Yankees...he spent a year in a clubhouse and went to a World Series. For a guy who talks about family as much as he does, we understand that over the course of a 162-game baseball season, you spend more time with those people than you do your own family.
“At the end of the World Series, he turned that hat backwards the minute the season was over, and that was it. He was no linger Juan Soto the New York Yankee chasing a championship. He was Juan Soto the free agent.”
C-Mac believed Soto’s last interview as a Yankee was purposeful, representing the start of his free agency. But he now believes that Soto really was that detached from the pinstripes as soon as the final out of the season was recorded.
“It was a lot more legit than even I thought it was,” C-Mac said. “I thought he purposely wanted to project that...I don’t think it was a projection. I get the sense that that just is Juan Soto. It is jarring to hear.
“It speaks more on the lack of relationship building. It surprises me, especially for a guy who talks about family as much as Juan Soto does. Over the course of 162 games with the Yankees, he built no family with this team. They were just co-workers.”
