C-Mac still not sold on Oswaldo Cabrera, but DJ LeMahieu isn't missed just yet

A caller asked C-Mac if DJ LeMahieu has become expendable thanks to Oswaldo Cabrera, who is hitting .333 with two home runs on the young season.

Despite Cabrera’s promising stretch, C-Mac says the Yanks can still use LeMahieu’s veteran bat.

“I like Oswaldo Cabrera. I do,” C-Mac said. “I don’t trust Oswaldo Cabrera yet to feel like he’s gonna give me what he’s given me over these 10 games for the rest of the year.

“DJ LeMahieu us the better hitter. No doubt about it. is it something that dramatically changes the team? No. it will make a difference because he’s still a better hitter than Oswaldo Cabrera…but I feel good now that Oswaldo Cabrera is a little something. If DJ comes back and isn’t himself, and the foot injury is hampering him the way the toe injury was at the start of last season and the year before, then they have a legitimate option at third base between him and Berti.”

LeMahieu is recovering from a foot fracture after ending the 2023 season strong while finally feeling healthy. If and when he is ready to return, C-Mac would like to see him back at third base, but thanks to Cabrera, it is not something that needs to be rushed.

“I don’t think he’s the game changer he was in ’19 and ’20,” C-Mac said. “I don’t think we’ll see that version of DJ again.

“He’s been afforded time to really wait. There’s no reason to rush him back.”
