Boomer & Gio: Could Yankees take Shohei Ohtani route to sign Blake Snell?

Juan Soto gave his Blake Snell endorsement to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, leading Boomer and Gio to wonder what it would take to get the reigning NL Cy Young winner to the Bronx.

The Yankees payroll is currently at $300 million and the top tier of luxury tax penalties, meaning the team would have to pay an extra 110 percent on whatever salary they bring in. with that in mind, Boomer pointed to the Shohei Ohtani contract that the Dodgers agreed to, which includes a boatload of deferrals that allowed the team to also bring in fellow Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

“We just saw these deferrals that were used…maybe the Yankees have to figure out something like that,” Boomer said.

“There is still a significant charge, even with the deferments. Otherwise, every team would do it if they could…I could see Blake Snell with the Yankees though.”

Gio doesn’t believe Hal Steinbrenner would be willing to pay that much in luxury tax penalties for Snell, but perhaps his price could drop enough as Opening Day nears to make it more enticing. Regardless, the fact that Snell, and Jordan Montgomery for that matter, is still available is baffling to Gio.

“It’s amazing that we’re sitting here now, it’s a month from Opening Day, and Blake Snell, the reigning Cy Young winner…is still out there,” Gio said. “This doesn’t happen in other sports.”
