The Yankees veteran bats unquestionably need to improve upon the numbers they’ve posted since Aaron Judge landed on the IL, but Evan says there needs to be a conversation about Anthony Volpe as well.
The rookie shortstop’s recent mechanical tweak didn’t seem to lead to sustained improvement, as he had a rough series in Boston, leading Evan to wonder when the voices will grow louder to send him down to Triple-A.
“It leads to a very fair question. At what point do you say, ‘This isn’t working, I have to send him down’? Not only for his good, but for the team’s good,” Evan said. “This team can’t score any runs. Oswald Peraza has performed at a high level at Triple-A. He deserves an opportunity. Maybe that opportunity comes at third base, because Josh Donaldson also sucks, and DJ LeMahieu has been lost since 2020. There are other ways to get Peraza in the lineup.
“At some point, you have to address the shortstop the batting .188. My question is, when? We sat here in spring training and said we can’t talk about sending him down until June 1. You have to give him time. We’re weeks past that. We had this little moment of, ‘he’s turning it around,’ but he’s not turning it around.”
The Yankees, both Aaron Boone and Hal Steinbrenner, have said that there haven’t been any discussions about sending Volpe down, but Evan believes it’s getting very close to where such a conversation will be necessary, as the Bombers are in desperate need of an offensive spark.
