Evan: Luis Gil's story is as amazing as his performance this season
After Luis Gil mowed down the Twins in six shutout innings of one-hit ball on Tuesday night, Evan says it’s past time to acknowledge that the electric righty is putting together one of the more special stories in New York sports.
“My favorite thing to watch in all of sports is a dominant starting pitcher,” Evan said. “One man’s performance can captivate a city. I remember hearing about Dwight Gooden doing it for this city in 1985. I remember Matt Harvey doing it to this city in New York City.
“I don’t even think Gerrit Cole has done what we’re witnessing right now with Luis Gil.”
Gil currently leads the American League with a 1.82 ERA in a season that he entered having thrown just four big-league innings since 2021. The 26-year-old has looked like one of the most unhittable starting pitchers in baseball since returning from Tommy John surgery, and Evan says he checks all the boxes for one of the improbable success stories that fans in New York cling to, like a Jeremy Lin.
“Can we take a second to just breathe in who in the damn hell Luis Gil is?” Evan said. “This is a kid fresh off of Tommy John surgery. This is a kid who was sent down to minor league camp midway through spring training. This was a kid acquired for a player later DFA’d in Jake Cave.
“Luis Gil is a story. His story is amazing. His performance is amazing.”
